Story, Wyoming is an eclectic
unincorporated community of approximately 650 - 750
residents, located in the foothills of the Big Horn
Mountains, midway between
Sheridan,
Wyoming and
Buffalo, Wyoming.
There are retirees, artists, musicians, writers,
physicians, attorneys, a judge, sportsmen of every ilk,
fly fishermen, a corporate office, and even a few
hippies left over from the sixties. Many regular folk
also live in Story, but work in Sheridan, preferring the
peaceful morning and evening drive as a way of relaxing
before and after their work day.
Most residents are attracted to Story
because of the convenient and safe access to a leisurely
and recreational lifestyle. There's no traffic to annoy
the runner or cyclist, and there are numerous routes on
the many country roads, both paved and unpaved. Penrose
Trail, at the western side of Story offers easy access
into the
Bighorn National Forest, and accommodates the
hiker, the hunter, or those that just want to ride up on
their ATV. Just five minutes from Story, this part of
the Big Horn Mountains boasts an abundance of wild game,
including elk, deer, moose, black bear, mountain lion,
antelope, and many other species just too numerous to
mention. So whether you're a hunter or you just simply
like to observe the wildlife, there's no better place.
For the fisherman or boater, in addition to the many
lakes and streams, there is also Lake DeSmet, located
just ten (10) minutes from Story. If dining out appeals
to you, Story has three casual restaurants, and
nightlife can be enjoyed at several local bars.
If you are a history buff, you
might be surprised to know that this area is rich in
Native American and early American history. The site of
Fort Phil Kearny and its adjacent museum is just a five
minute drive, as well as the site of the Wagon Box
Fight, and the Fetterman Fight. These are all
well-documented sites where some major battles between
Native Americans and the U.S. Calvary occurred in the
early years of our country's history.
Story is obviously not for everyone. If you are
looking for a stressful, fast-paced lifestyle,
you'll not find it here. You come to Story to relax
and play, and enjoy the best of what life has to
offer. |
